Pectin can be produced from apple pomace which can be used in the food industry as a gelling agent and emulsifier. It is also used in edible coatings and biodegradable packaging of food. Pectin is also used to enhance drug and gene delivery, wound healing, and even tissue engineering. Pharmaceuticals (e.g. essential oil from orange peel, glycoalkaloids, antioxidants) can be extracted from juice pressings. Can be used as substrates for microbial enzyme production. Extraction of antioxidants and phytochemicals for use in the pharmaceuticals and cosmetics industries.
